Apple Trees Mural

Winchester, VA

This is a new mural by artist Sarah Gallahan, who has painted a number of murals in the northern Shenandoah Valley. She did this one for White House Foods, a producer of fruit products. I’ve been eating their applesauce ever since I can remember.

I’ve posted some of her colorful murals before and you can see them by searching this blog for Gallahan. Here is a collage of examples.

New Murals at the Rescue Mission

Winchester, Virginia

The Winchester Rescue Mission now has a wrap-around mural that will bring attention to the location and to the services they offer. They provide food and shelter to people in need, plus provide other assistance, inspired by Biblical teachings.

The mural was sketched by artist Sarah Gallahan and painted by a team of volunteers. It replaced a smaller mural of a lighthouse, which I shared four years ago.

A Fancy Hog Mural

Monday Murals

This mural is on the front wall of Jordan Springs Market, a store and eatery known for their barbecue (B-B-Q). For those not in southern USA, barbecue here is often roast pork, delectably seasoned and cooked over a fire. Interestingly, the word barbecue is derived from a Native American word, and early Spanish explorers observed Taino people roasting meat on a wooden “barbecoa” or grill, over an open fire.

The mural is signed by Sarah Gallahan, who I just realized is the artist who painted the one I shared last week! With that in mind, I searched this blog for her name and found that she painted the Rescue Mission, the New Star Market, and Solenberger’s Hardware.

I don’t know if you can tell from the close-up of the window but police officers are enjoying a meal inside. There is a joke here but I shall refrain except to note that they are probably eating pig, framed by a pig.

This market has won awards for its barbecue. It is in Stephenson near Winchester.

Greetings from Winchester

...and Patsy!

When I read that artist Sarah Gallahan had painted a new mural in Winchester, I made a mental note to see it. Last week I had a medical appointment there, so I went to find the mural. Unfortunately, a car was blocking part of it so I can’t show the entire painting at once.

On the left is a postcard view with the word “Greetings from Winchester.” On the right is a painting of music legend, Patsy Cline.

Patsy Cline, who died in a plane crash in 1963, was from Winchester and became a recording star in both country music and pop music. Her biggest hit was the song "Crazy," written by Willie Nelson.

I think it’s appropriate that the painting is on a wall of the Workingman’s Store / Blue Collar Mercantile. Patsy was from a working class family, and was initially looked down on by Winchester society. Her parents were divorced, and Patsy left high school in order to go to work and help support her mother and siblings. Her mother was a talented seamstress, and made many of Patsy’s stage costumes.

The apple blossoms that you see in the paintings are references to local apple otchards and the annual Apple Blossom Parade. Blossoms are painted on the pavement here and through the town to direct visitors to the parade route

New Murals at the New Star.

If you are a photographer, you probably know the experience of glimpsing something as you drive by and knowing you simply must go back and get a picture. This happened when I passed the New Star Market last month. I've stopped there before to take pictures of their decorated patio. Now they have some bright new murals.

An employee told me the artist was working on another mural at the end of the building. I found her cleaning up for the day.

I came back on a later date to see the finished mural. It looks stunning! There's a rock cliff, some climbers, and the river in the distance.

If you drive out 55 between the interstate and Star Tannery, you'll want to take a look at this gas station/market/BBQ.

The artist is Sarah Gallahan, who also painted the anniversary mural on a hardware store in Winchester.

Artwork on the Paladin Downtown

Winchester, VA

After I read that Sarah Gallahan Art had painted new murals on a restaurant on Piccadilly Street, I drove into Winchester to see them. They are pretty spectacular!

Also on that block are murals painted on parking spaces. I was only able to capture a few of them because, you know, cars park there.

When I read that there was a new mural at this stone yard in Winchester, I made a note to go see it. The artist is Sarah Gallahan.

This place has an outdoor show room with samples of limestone walls, and lovely patios to inspire you to buy their products.
