Downtown Edinburg, VA

Here we have some street scenes in Edinburg, a quaint town in Shenandoah County. You can click on the collage to see it larger.

There are a number of churches in the town. This one is Edinburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). A plaque tells us it dates to 1869.

Although the town covers less than one square mile of land, much of the surrounding area carries an Edinburg address.

Civil War Action in Edinburg

During Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's 1862 Valley campaign, Confederate Col. Turner Ashby's cavalry and Chew's Battery halted Union Maj Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks's steady advance southward. Ashby engaged Union forces 28 times in April along Stony Creek and the Valley Pike. Confederate guns located on Cemetery Hill to the southwest, dueled with Union batteries on Academy Hill directly across the center of Edinburg. In early October 1864, during their burning of the Shenandoah Valley, Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan's troopers set the Edinburg Mill afire but extinguished it after two local girls protested.

The Old Hotel Edinburg

In Shenandoah County, Virginia

Across from the bank in Edinburg is an old hotel that is currently used by the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). When I first tried to take a picture of it, a vehicle pulled in beside me. There was an attractive guy in the passenger seat so I took his picture!

When I looked for information on this old hotel, I found a postcard image. I assume the train once stopped nearby, making this an ideal location for travelers.

I crossed Stoney Creek Road to get a picture near the railroad. One set of railroad tracks has been removed and the other set is in disrepair. The train doesn't run here anymore.

A plaque gives the date of the hotel as 1904. It was placed by the Edinburg Heritage Foundation.

A Park in Edinburg, VA

I took these pictures at Edinburg's Madison District Park. It's on Town Hall Avenue in Edinburg behind the old middle school.

The mountain is part of the Massanutten Range.

Views along Palmyra Church Road

Edinburg

Palmyra Church was organized in 1885 and the current building dates to 1942.

The property has views of farms and mountains.

The scenic road that bears its name stretches from Mt. Jackson to Edinburg. It is east of the Valley Pike, mostly across the Shenandoah River.

It reaches Edinburg near Stony Creek Campground.

The carolina wrens have returned to my yard. I heard one singing and there it was!

 I'd also like to show you a couple of scenes from Edinburg last week. The first is a view from the bridge on Edinburg Gap Road. 

Just east of there is Lost Bottoms Farm. This was before the recent hard frost that nipped the pretty flowers. 

The Mill House, Edinburg

This house next to the Edinburg Mill was built in 1850 by George Grandstaff. It was the home to a series of millers.

Evening Event, Edinburg

Yesterday we went on the Victorian Christmas Candlelight Parlor Tour in Edinburg. We bought tickets at the mill and made the rounds. The sites included a church and a B&B as well as a number of charming homes. The holiday decorations helped me get in the mood for the Christmas season.

I saw last year's tour described on the Shenandoah Valley Flowers blog. The event is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in Edinburg, VA.

Edinburg Town Park

In mid-June, I posted a picture of a mural in progress at the public swimming pool in Edinburg. I later saw the artist at ArtFest and learned that she was painting another mural on a different side of the same building. Charlie and I went by there the other day, and I got pictures of the fun duck paintings on the changing room doors.

I also took a picture of the first mural, which unfortunately was in deep shade.

The artist calls her business “Studio Sasquatch,” but her real name is Ennedi Shtanko. She says that she spent many childhood hours at this swimming pool. She relates to Sasquatch as an independent spirit living deep in nature.

Today I drove to the town of Edinburg. Here is the post office there. Someone has posted a banner saying "Heroes work here."

I crossed the Massanutten Range at Edinburg Gap and headed down Fort Valley Road. I found myself behind a buggy for a while until it finally turned off into a driveway. There was a truck behind me so I didn't dare stop to get a picture of the horse. And although not all Mennonites avoid cameras, I didn't want to be intrusive.

Mallards Near the Mill

Edinburg, VA

This afternoon, I wound up in Edinburg after Charlie got restless and campaigned to go out. I wanted to stop at the recycling center because I had a bunch of glass bottles. (Our town’s recycling contractor does not take glass. I’m just happy that they pick up our other recycling because until last week, we did not have any recycling pickup at all here. This will decrease my trips to the recycling center a great deal.)  I also took some large boxes because I don’t want to fill up my recycling container with cardboard. 

A rainstorm was in the forecast, so I felt it was best not to drive very far. I decided to go to nearby Stony Creek by Edinburg Mill. I snapped a few pictures of mallard ducks before I got Charlie out of the car, and then took him a short distance upstream to walk where he would not scare the ducks. We found a narrow trail down to the water.

I was pleased to find a new spot for viewing the water.

The final picture shows the old railroad bridge in the distance. Trains no longer run through here, and there are hopes that the right-of-way will become a trail for walking and biking.

Edinburg was once called Stony Creek after the river that runs through it on the way to the North Fork of the Shenandoah.

Sharing with Fences Around the World.

When we were in Edinburg for their yearly festival, I photographed this young man who is an actor with Theatre Shenandoah.

Then last weekend we went to a play at Theatre Shenandoah. It is a small venue on the second floor of a building that has had other uses, including a firehouse. The play was Arsenic and Old Lace.

We weren't allowed to take any pictures of the play because there are copyright issues.

Edinburg Mill

This Shenandoah Valley landmark is mentioned on Civil War Traveler as follows:

Edinburg Mill, two Trails signs in the parking lot of the mill on Route 11 – This mill, opened in 1850, survived the burnings ordered in late September and early October 1864 by Union Gen. Philip Sheridan. More than two years earlier Confederates used Stony Creek (which provided the mill's power) as a defensive line. A sharp battle on the line near the mill in late March 1862 delayed a Federal advance on the Valley Pike.

Saturday Critters Including a Petting Zoo

Charlie is already asleep so he's not going to write a report tonight. Sometimes he's grumpy if I wake him up from a nap.

Lynn came to my rescue on Thursday when I found a leak under the kitchen sink. Here is Charlie watching her get out of the car. She was able to replace the connector that was leaking. I raised a couple of clever girls!

Today did not feel like Saturday because it rained all day. I managed to take my recycling to the bins when the rain let up, and I took Charlie for a walk under the tall pine trees in Edinburg Park. We were back in the car before a downpour hit. 

Last weekend was much nicer. Edinburg had their annual festival. I took some pictures at the petting zoo.

Well, I just checked the weather report and it looks like tomorrow may be sunny after all. When I checked earlier, there was rain in the forecast for four days in a row. One day is good, but after that, I’m ready for sunshine. And so is Charlie because he likes to take walks and have adventures.
