Along the Hawksbill Greenway

Near the Commuter Parking Lot, Luray.

When I photographed the mural that I posted on Monday, I strolled along Luray's Hawksbill Greenway for a short distance, taking pictures. Here we see that this is a Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail.

I came across a Civil War Trails sign regarding the 1864 Valley Campaign entitled Fisher's Hill and Yager's Mill. Here Union forces under General Torbert caught up with "remnants of Confederate cavalry under Col. William H. Payne here around Yager’s Mill. Gen. George A. Custer and Col. Charles R. Lowell, Jr. attacked Payne’s brigade with two Federal cavalry brigades and artillery. Badly outnumbered and outgunned, the Confederates retreated to Honeyville before moving on to Port Republic."

The park is peaceful now. Some amenities are not available, like this bench which was taped off due to fear of spreading COVID-19.

The paved trail runs along Hawksbill Creek and is two miles long.

  3. What a great series...pretty scenery as always. Sad feelings when thinking of those soldiers fighting there. We southeners must accept we lost that war.
