Critters: Avian, Reptilian, Mammalian

Muscovy Ducks (Feral)

Turtle
Rat Snake on Garden Hose
I don't enjoy seeing snakes! This black one was stretched out in front of our door and I waited for him to slink away before I stepped outside. Then I took his picture!

Rat snakes are harmless unless you happen to be a rodent or bird. I learned that they are protected in Virginia, as are all snakes unless they present a threat. They can be very startling though! I scattered some snake repellent around our door. I don't know how effective it is.

Okay, enough about snakes! The little bird on a willow branch and some cows are more pleasant to see, at least for me.

  1. Love the birds, the meadow...but the snake! No way. I know for sure, I'd keep the snake repellent manufacturer in business for a lifetime!!

Thank you for sharing these amazing images with us birders at I'd Rather B Birdin' this week!! You're always appreciated!

  2. I've been hoping to spot my brother-in-law's rat snake again!

(He doesn't like snakes, either, but I've seen it twice in his backyard. That's the one I got to pose crawling over my left shoe.)

I haven't seen any Muscovy ducks in such a while. They are very personable!

  3. Things that don't make much noise when they slither can be startling

  4. We do need some snakes but I would rather not have them around my house and garden. There is something about them that really scares me, even when I know they are more helpful than harmful.

  5. So that is the name of the ducks. I have seen them before but didn't know the name.
    The snake - scream!!!
I can't let them go if they are anywhere near my steps, can't help what they are. They can slither inside under doors if there is a tiny spot for them to come in.
Not protected at my house. Very good shots you have here today.

  7. I don't mind snakes too much so long as I know where they are and that they aren't poisonous.
