Daffodils AKA Jonquils or Narcissus

I spotted my first daffodils of the season on Monday along Lupton Road.  Did you know they have tepals? When I read that, I thought tepal might be a typo, but no. The word tepal is used when the petals cannot be distinguished from sepals.

Today I saw  daffodils blooming in my yard. I plucked one to take a picture while I was walking Charlie this evening.

I decided to hold it up for more light. I took several versions because I was holding the flower in one hand while holding my cell phone and the dog’s leash in the other hand. I won’t show you the blurred version! I used the timer feature on the phone because it’s almost impossible to hold the phone steady while tapping the button with the same hand, so I set a 3-second delay.

The sky deserves its own shot.

  3. Nice. I usually spot the first one near the old tree every Spring.

  4. We don’t have daffodils yet, but it’s something to look forward to and the daytime temperatures are already consistently above freezing. The sap is running and all the sugar shacks are in operation now. The mere thought of fresh maple syrup makes me giddy!

  7. Daffodils have just started up here. I temporarily don't have the balance and energy that I usually have so I have posted previous years daffodils. But that is no fun.

  8. I found some in our area also! Narcissus is a different flower however, with tiny white blooms, and comes out about the same time, as well as tiny little hyacinths in different colors these days...purple, pink, white and sometimes yellow.

  9. I grew up in Arkansas and they were always the first sign of Spring. Out in the country there would be big patches of them around an old home place. Love your photos!

  12. Spring flowers are so perky and brightly colored and we wait for them to pop out of the ground in their splendor. Nice job photographing these daffodils. Plus holding onto the dog leash while taking the shot I applaud your commitment and passion for photography.

  15. No daffodils here yet although my early ones (that usually don't bloom becauses it's now too shady there) are poking above the ground. There's little as cheery as a daffodil - so yellow. I liked the daffodil picture taken against the sky. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  16. Daffodils are so lovely and but they make me homesick for Oregon this time of year. Thank you Linda for your thoughtful comment on my first post for a while -- it made me feel more as if there was something I can do for the world just by calling attention to the natural world.
