The goldfinch picture is from a year ago. Doesn't he look fine in his spring plumage?
I think the bird standing on my neighbor's garden torch is a male house finch. What do you think?

Your second bird is a House Finch, as you surmised. As for masking, I never gave up on it in enclosed public spaces.
