Stoney Creek Mallards

In Shenandoah County, Big Stoney Creek runs from the Orkney Springs area to the North Fork of the Shenandoah. Today's pictures were taken near the Edinburg Mill on the lower part of the stream.

The water was clear on the day I visited. People feed the ducks at the mill parking lot, so they flock around. Many of them are mallards. They were very active, chasing around and splashing.

I'm also showing one of the white ducks, probably a domestic breed gone feral. Mallards are said to be the ancestors of domestic ducks, and some mallards have domesticated themselves by attaching themselves to humans, basically in order to enjoy a steady supply of food.

  1. We can rely upon Mallards to follow us around and then when they've finished the bread to splash about a lot.

  8. Normally birdwatchers view mallards as a dull and common species, but I say they are REMARKABLE because of their wide adaptation to almost everywhere on the planet!
