Waynesboro Post Office and Fishburne School

I met Lynn for lunch near Staunton the other day and then I made a brief visit to Waynesboro. I'll share the mural I found on Monday but I also came across the post office. I recognized it by the parking lot full of mail trucks so I drove around the front to take a picture.

Here's a closer view of the Heroes sign. Our postal workers are considered essential employees so they continued to serve during the first phase of Virginia's Covid-19 lockdown when many other workers stayed home to avoid contagion.

Across the street from the post office is the Fishburne Military School and this historical marker.
James Abbott Fishburne, an honor graduate of Washington College inspired by its president, Robert E. Lee, opened in 1879 with 24 students what eventually became Fishburne Military School. Staunton architectural firm T.J. Collins & Son designed the 1916-1922 barracks in the castellated Gothic style, the 1915 library (Virginia's second-oldest Carnegie library), and the 1940 gymnasium-administrative building. In Feb. 1919, the school adopted one of the nation's first Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs. Operated by the Fishburne-Hudgins Educational Foundation since 1951, the school is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.

  3. The postal workers are doing a good job in challenging times. The military school buildings set in a green field or lawn look architecturally interesting. Our local army barracks are also castellated and were built in the Victorian period.
They're now used as a supermarket so cannot have been listed buildings of historical interest. Have a good weekend.

  5. I've always thought of postal workers as heroes, though they have been underpaid and overworked for ages.
