Middleburg UMC

Yesterday we visited Middleburg, Virginia. I couldn't help noticing that reconstruction was underway on the steeple of the Methodist Church. The church dates to 1856.

The fences around the church were decorated with brightly painted foxes. It turns out that April 1 was the first day of an auction of these decorated pieces. It's a fundraiser conducted by the local garden club.

Why foxes? Middleburg is in Virginia's horse country, a rich area of country estates where fox hunting is still considered a sport. I noticed local ladies were wearing riding boots as they shopped and socialized in town. That's how I can tell them from tourists!

  5. Hi, I've been in churches which had that kind of work on their steeples... That can get expensive!!!!!

I'm puzzled about their use of FOXES.. Did you find out what was the significance of that?

    Hugs,

    1. Middleburg is in "hunt country" where the wealthy still hunt foxes from horseback.

  6. Yes, foxes are iconic in Middleburg. There is an annual parade of horses and hounds going down the main street in December. Polo is big in that area also. Great pictures Linda :)

  7. I'd much rather see the foxes left alone, but I like these pieces.

  8. I'd would have loved to see these.
Middleburg has quite the history, which I am sure you know and John Kent Cooke lives there.
