The Church on Narrow Path

We were driving through beautiful Fort Valley and decided to take a look at a large tract that I'd read was for sale. We happened upon this lovely church built of wood and stone. A sign reads "The Ever Holy Virgin Mary of Zion."

This is on a road named Narrow Path, which branches off Zion Passage. Yes, I was intrigued by the biblical reference so I found the story of the subdivision. It was created by a doctor who gave up his practice to build a self-sustaining lifestyle in Virginia. He named the collection of homes and businesses “Familia Dei, The Village of Mount Zion,” where he lived with his daughters and grandchildren. After eight homes were built plus the church and some other buildings, Dr. Sabates decided to move out of the area and put his properties up for auction. Some vacant lots were sold but the rest is still available. So if you have 8 million bucks, you can buy 310 acres of hilly paradise!
The area looks spectacular but it's rather remote because it's nestled in the Massanutten Mountains. To reach shopping, schools, or a hospital, you have to travel miles on a two-lane road through one one of the few gaps that lead out of "The Fort," as the valley is called by locals.
