Yellow Leaves, Passage Creek

I should know tree what this is but I don't. Maybe a reader will enlighten me. I was attracted to the color of the heart-shaped leaves.

The creek is a lovely trout stream that runs through a gap in the Massanutten Range near my home in Virginia. It's part of George Washington National Forest.

  6. I posted the link on my facebook page; it was suggested it might be sassasfras.

  7. I'm thinking it's a redbud tree. They're very hardy, grow anywhere, are especially happy in rocky soil, and do well as shrubs or trees. While the spring buds are a sort of magenta red, the leaves turn golden in Fall.

  8. I agree. Looks Like redbud. We saw a lot of them driving through the Appalachians this spring.

  12. I agree that it's probably redbud. Looked up pics of redbud in autumn and they match. Thanks!
