Yesterday in Waynesboro

I met Lynn in Waynesboro and we looked at a house because I’m looking for an investment property. Unfortunately, it needed major renovation. However, I found this mural at the Fire Department.

The house we looked at was next to a nice park.

Lynn doesn't like posing but she agreed to lean on the car and I took some iPhone pictures using Portrait mode. I like this one.

On the way home I stopped briefly at the arboretum in Harrisonburg and took a few pictures by the parking lot.

The Old Garbers Church

"Garber's Church is the oldest continuously used Brethren meetinghouse in Virginia. It is estimated that the first services by the Brethren in the Dayton-Bridgewater area date back to around 1790. This was about the time that Rev. Daniel Garber and his brother-in-law, John Wampler, moved into the Dayton area. The Garber and Wampler families, along with other families, built up the Cooks Creek Congregation, a body of worshipping Brethren. They would worship in the homes of members located in the Dayton, Bridgewater, and Beaver Creek area. By 1822, the congregation grew so large that Garber's Church of the Brethren was built. In 1880, Cooks Creek Congregation had 300 members, mostly adults. Garber's is the "mother church" to other Brethren churches in the area. The known branches of the mother church in 1900 were: Garbers, Dayton, Bridgewater, Pleasant Run, Hinton Grove, Cedar Grove (Brandywine, WV), Smith Creek (WV) and North Fork (WV)."

The Weather Changed.

Yesterday was so warm I sat on the deck and enjoyed the sunshine. I watched a flock of birds land in a tree. They may have been starlings but I am not sure.

This morning I looked out and viewed a snowy scene. We had strong winds from time to time so the only time I went outside was to get the mail. 

Can you see a flat bird feeder in the black and white photo? I zoomed in on it with my Nikon. A slate-colored junco made itself comfortable in the feeder and was eating black thistle seeds.

It looks like Spring but it’s not.

We've enjoyed several warm days lately and today was sunny. I sat outside without a coat for a while. 

Yet a snowstorm is expected early tomorrow morning! Some folks call this "pneumonia weather" because it stresses out the body, potentially weakening its defenses.

Garden Post #740: After the rain stopped the other day, I took some pictures of crocuses and daffodils with raindrops still clinging to them.

Yesterday started out rainy and after it stopped, the clouds were lifting.

Lynn and Travis came over this afternoon and she spotted a hot air balloon in the sky. Travis is painting my living room.

The white throated sparrow could blend in from a distance. I zoomed in for this picture.

This house can be seen from Burke Lake Road and also from the driveway to Sunrise Senior Living. It has been integrated into the buildings of the Senior Living campus. 

The historical marker has faded over the years.

Here lived Lt. Col. Silas Burke (b.1796–d.1854) and his wife, Hannah Coffer. Burke, for whom Burke's Station on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad was named, served as a director of the railroad and the Fairfax Turnpike Company. An innkeeper and farmer, Burke was elected president of the Fairfax Agricultural Society in 1850. He held many county offices with distinction, including road surveyor, commissioner of public buildings and schools, county court justice, presiding justice, and sheriff.

Slavic Christian Church

This appears to be a new church in the final stages of construction. I read that the congregation has an older facility on the other side of town which the are readying for use by refugees from Ukraine. They are working with other Slavic churches in the Shenandoah Valley to help the people who are suffering in Ukraine.

March is Mild So Far

Our weather has been really nice this week, but of course that will change. Now it is Friday so allow me to catch up by posting miscellaneous recent pictures, starting with a reflection and street scene in Strasburg. 

The black and white landscape is near Woodstock, looking toward the Massanutten Mountains.

A money tree sounds like a good investment, doesn't it? I didn't fall for it though. My mother told me money doesn't grow on trees!

I haven't seen much blooming outdoors yet, just some pansies that looked recently planted. My daffodil plants have buds, though.

Today’s misadventure involved a corroded battery connection.  I had gone to Harrisonburg on errands and picture-taking. I stopped to get some red beans and rice but my car would not start up again. I tried to call the Nissan dealer and did not get through to service on the first try, and then they closed. I called the auto club and it took a long time for someone to arrive. Eventually I got on the road again, well after dark.

Anyway, I’ve been collecting some signs and sayings to share.

Indian Run Overlook, Skyline Drive

The City Daily Photo theme for March 1st is Solitude. There is something powerful about gazing out from a high viewpoint at the vast sky and the landscape below you. 

My first choice for this theme was actually the second picture, but I used a version of it before and I prefer posting something new. Here I have cropped it to a vertical shape. 
 

The first image shows a man on a motorcycle looking at the valley below. This overlook faces eastward toward Rappahannock County.
