A Field in Shanksville

Flight 93 National Memorial

It’s been three years since I visited this site in Pennsylvania. It’s been 24 years since the 911 attacks. An entire generation has grown up since then.

I have written about this memorial and about the 911 anniversary before. I keep thinking that this will fade from memory with the passage of time, but traumatic events leave their mark.

When I visited the memorial, I viewed the exhibits but did not listen to the audio recordings. It would’ve been just too much to handle emotionally. I also did not visit the tower in the picture, preferring to see it from a distance.

  1. America needs to embrace our history. The past history of our founding fathers as well as things like the tragedy that took place on 9/11. I love America and I grew up in a time when you knew all your neighbors and you didn't lock your doors and kids rode bikes to school and roller skated on the sidewalks. I wish all of our children could experience a time when they feel safe like we did back in the 1950s. The children from my generation grew up loving America and being proud to call themselves an American wouldn't it be nice to see that again 🥰

  2. I visited Shanksville not too long after it happened and saw the temporary memorial. It was heartbreaking to see. The vicar who married us years before in a small village in the southwest of England lost his daughter that day in the towers. She was over here on business. Everyone I knew seemed to know someone who knew someone. We passed by the Pentagon on our way to pick up relatives at the train station and the gaping hole in the side of the building horrified us. I remember it all so vividly the morning it happened. We will never forget will we?
