Daughter of the Stars

A legend says that Shenandoah means “daughter of the stars.” Another theory holds that it means river in the spruces, but that seems unlikely to me because spruce trees in Virginia grow at high elevations, not along the river. What seems certain is that it was a Native American name.

I found this “daughter of the stars” mural in the town of Shenandoah. It was pure luck that I came across this after making a wrong turn. It is at a ballpark near the VFW.

The Shenandoah River is very pretty and often the water does glitter like stars.

  1. It would be nice to know the real origins of the name, but the native language has probably been lost, unfortunately.

  2. Nice mural, I like the name Daughter of the Stars. The rivers views are beautiful. Take care, have a happy day!

  3. Thanks so much for telling me about Daughter of the Stars, and I love the mural!

  4. Hmm, I with you about the translation.

The View from Squirrel Ridge features thousands of views of the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding area. I post frequently so please visit often.
