The View from Pass Mountain Overlook

Shenandoah National Park
Milepost 30 on Skyline Drive

This beautiful overlook is less than 2 miles north of  the Thornton Gap (Route 211) entrance to Skyline Drive. A hiker stopped to read the sign, which provides instructions for using the adjacent stand to take a phone picture and send it to Chronolog to become part of the slide show and research tool.

Yes, I took a picture when I was there on Tuesday. It was January 17 and this section of the park had just reopened so my picture was the first one since January 5.

Two storms had taken down many trees and branches. The southern section of Skyline Drive is still closed while crews finish clearing the roadway.

  1. Hello,
I always love Shenandoah Nat'l park images, the last photo is lovely. Take care, have a happy weekend!

  2. Cool use of the public to aid research.

  3. What a pity that the storm hit those wonderful and imposing trees... I wonder how many years they had, probably they were more than a century old!
Anyway it remains a charming place, that's sure :)
Thank you for everything you share with us, dear Linda,
    God bless

  4. Beautiful photos, Linda. The last one is my favorite.

  5. It's a beautiful spot, and sad that those large trees (next to last picture) succumbed to the storm. I've never seen a plaque like that request to take a picture at the stand. I would have! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  6. That's a great idea to allow the general public to submit photos. The photo timeline is impressive. I checked out the Chronolog website... no CA desert spots that I can see, but there are other areas in CA, some that are closely following burn area recovery.

  7. Glad you participated in the research photo request.

The View from Squirrel Ridge features thousands of views of the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding area. I post frequently so please visit often.
