This week I went on a tour of the Shenandoah County Landfill. From a distance, it's a pretty place.

Water that seeps through trash contains toxins, so it is not dumped into waterways but instead is piped to a water treatment plant. We viewed the series of ponds and tanks where the water cleaned up and sanitized before being piped to the river.
We returned to the landfill for a closer look at the engineering that protects groundwater. Areas are dug out and lined before trash is dumped in.
Then we went to the recycling area. Shenandoah County still accepts plastic of almost every variety. It is sorted and baled and sent to be reused. Metal and paper products are also sorted and sold. Glass is not sent out but is crushed and used onsite, often as a filtering material.

ReplyDeleteThe landfill tour sounds interesting. You get to see how they process the plastic and there's plenty of that around today. It's also great to see how they clean up and sanitize the water.
