Junco, Mourning Dove, and a Greedy Squirrel

These are common backyard birds in Virginia.

Squirrels love to eat! This eastern gray squirrel was determined to get seed from the bird feeder. At one point he was hanging from it, spinning around! But he quickly pulled himself up on the feeder. From there he figured out how to jump back to his perch.

Did you know squirrels are known for regenerating natural forests?

  1. Cute photos of the squirrel. I guess their habit of burying nuts and seeds (so that new trees grow) is a point in their favor!
    Love seeing your birds, too
Hope you are having a great weekend!

  2. Again, thanks so very much for sharing all of the feathered nature with us birders at I'd Rather B Birdin' this weekend. LOVE THE JUNCO PORTRAIT! But, I must admit the squirrel steals the show today...darling.

  3. Hello, I love the sweet Dove and Juncos. I am always battling the squirrels here, they take over the feeders. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Sunday, enjoy your day and weekend!

  8. That squirrel! How can those creatures be so cute, so smart, and so annoying all at once? Nice they do something helpful. Wonderful captures of the dove and junco as well.

  9. We have those birds around here. Squirrels of course, which make up for their mischief with their acrobatics.

  11. I love that wee Junco. He is looking rather plump but is a real cutie. I guess squirrels will figure out most feeders and how to take advantage of them. My cats and dogs used to love watching them and try to get them. They always failed. :)

  12. I just love juncos! The Dark Eyed Juncos we have here visit often but they move so fast I can rarely get photos! Love your mourning dove too, and that cheeky squirrel just helping himself!

  13. Squirrels are cute to watch, but they will eat you out of house and home.

  14. Yes. I read that they forget where they bury some of their seeds and then those seeds grow! Fabulous. But it is hard to imagine that they forget anything because they seem so smart about figuring out things! No feeder is safe from them. The dove looks huge next to the junco -=- I knew it was bigger of course, but not how much bigger!!
