Blog Post #5200

Yes, this is my 5,200th post here! And on blog anniversaries I try to break my usual patterns and let you in on something about me or my thought processes. For this one I decided to use the Good, Random and Fun format to tell you three secrets about me. Don't get excited, they're not scandalous. (Sorry!)

The Good: Years ago I was doing a goal-setting exercise in order to make a career decision and one step was to give your own definition of success. I thought about it and decided that "Success is living in accordance with your values."

I realize that there's a popular conception that success means accumulating material things, but that's just collecting, or perhaps showing off. Live your values, do it honestly and as well as you can. Oh, and the first rule to success is to survive.

The Random: Sometimes I look in the mirror or at a picture of me and think of the line in Maggie May that goes "The morning sun when it's in your face really shows your age." Yes, I'm looking older. I held it at bay for a long time, having inherited a tendency toward looking younger from my mother, but that time has passed. Well, we all get older, and since most makeup makes my skin break out, I just have to live with it.

The Fun: I try to do something fun every weekend, or (even better) something spectacular! If that's not possible, I strive to at least make time for something interesting and constructive.

This past weekend presented a challenge since it was raining, actually storming, but Frank and I enjoy art shows so we went to Art at the Mill in Millwood. They always have a great show and the old mill itself is delightful. I saw more work by Steven Walker, one of my favorite painters who displays locally, and also noted the name of an artist who paints richly patterned works that remind me of Matisse, Sharon Nick.

From there we crossed the street to a small art gallery, and learned that there was even a third art show going on nearby at the Carter Mill, so we went there too. It was very enjoyable for a rainy day.
