A Sunny Afternoon in Front Royal

stadium entrance
Front Royal, VA. 12/30/2014
On Tuesday the weather was nice and we had to run errands in Front Royal, so we decided to take a walk by the river. But first my husband wanted a cheeseburger so we got one at Wendy's (where senior citizens get a free beverage) and parked across the street so he could eat it. There's a park next to the town's stadium. As you can see by the sign, it was named for the singer/actor Bing Crosby. Mr. Crosby donated funds towards building it back in the 50's.

For our walk, we drove to Eastham Park. We didn't walk very far but it was nice to stretch our legs and look at the Shenandoah River.

  4. It got up to 36 yesterday, and seemed real warm. I like the name of this town, I will have to look at its origin.

    1. The origin of the name is lost to history as it dates to colonial times. Locals favor a story about a "royal oak" but personally I think this was the Frontier Royal, as the British settlers had not yet ventured beyond the mountains, which was inhabited by native tribes and French trappers.

  6. Happy New Year. May 2015 bring you (and me) lots of joy, happiness and GOOD HEALTH.

That was nice of Bing Crosby to donate money to build the stadium. What was his connection to Front Royal? NEAT!

    Hugs,

    1. Crosby came to nearby Winchester to be in the Apple Blossom Parade. He also came to Front Royal -- I saw photos of him touring Skyline Caverns. He was befriended by a local man who told him about plans to build a stadium, and he gave two separate donations.

  8. Didn't know about the Bing Crosby Stadium. Thanks for the post. Always got a laugh out of his "Road" movies with Bob Hope.

  9. The river looks lovely.

I don't mind the notion of the stadium being named after him. It's corporate branding that you have these days with stadiums, arenas, and whatever else that I find profoundly tacky.

    1. Yes, there's a stadium in Northern Virginia called the Jiffy Lube Amphitheater. Not very classy.

  11. It's nice to see that they name something after a person and not just another corporation. Oh, I forgot corporations are people. Tom The Backroads Traveller
