Inching Up to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge

BAY BRIDGE
5 Miles
40 Minutes

We were stuck in traffic for two hours Saturday as we approached the Bay Bridge. An accident earlier in the day had already been cleared but the backup still persisted for many miles. The above sign was posted near Annapolis, and an average of 8 miles per hour was about what we experienced.

We finally reached the toll gates but there was still a delay as the 12 lanes at the gates funneled down to two lanes to cross the bridge. I had time to wonder about the "Wipers OFF" sign; that is, how many toll collectors got sprayed with water before these signs were posted?

Finally we reached normal traffic flow on the bridge. Poor Frank was getting tired from working the brake for two hours! (Stop, go, stop, go, stop, go...)

We were glad that our destination was Easton, which is not too far from the bridge. We were certainly ready to walk around and then rest for a while!

The bridge is 4.3 miles long and is officially called the William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge.

  1. A beautiful bridge... but what a delay getting there.

  3. Betsy has never crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and I've offered to go over it the next time we are in that part of the country. Now I'm not so sure that is a good idea -- I don't do well in heavy traffic.
