Pelicans Over the Pacific

We saw plenty of pelicans along the Pacific Coast in Southern California. They fly in V-shaped formations like geese do.

Scientists have found that birds in the center of the formation glide for a much longer time than those on the edges of the “V” so they are using less energy. They take turns flying in the easy positions, reducing fatigue for everyone compared to flying solo. (See this article on V formations.)
