History Students Lost and Found

Civil War Field Trip Near Romney, WV

We stopped at an air strip along WV Route 8 near the Romney bridge. Some members of our car-caravan had gotten separated from the class in a construction zone and were temporarily lost. When they reached Romney they were able to get a cell phone signal and called for clarification of directions. Before long the group reassembled for a lecture here.

The Civil War interpretive marker concerns Captain George W. Stump, CSA. However, our class was not there to study Captain Stump. We were learning about the surrender nearby of many members of McNeill's Rangers after Appomattox. They surrendered at "Sycamore Dale" after negotiating to keep their weapons.
