Pink lady

lady slippersGrowing in our backyard are these pink lady's slippers. These wildflowers are uncommon but you can find them growing near pine trees here in Virginia. We have a few small patches of them.

Their fancy name is Cypripedium and they belong to the orchid family.

When the lot behind ours was cleared for a homesite, I built a small wall around the lady's slippers that were close to the property line. It turned out to be a good thing, because the builder dumped huge piles of dirt next to them, but managed to avoid the little walled area. (It probably helped that I explained to him what was there. They were not blooming by the time he excavated the site.)
