The Old Post Office at Graves Mlll

Near Madison, Virginia

This is a reconstruction of the post office that was destroyed by a flood in 1995. After that, postal services were conducted from nearby Graves Chapel until Postmaster Ruth Lillard retired in 2001.

There is a bulletin board on the side of the building explaining that the post office was located 150 yards away on the other side of the road before the devastating flood. It dated to 1905 or perhaps a few years before.

Next to the post office is a small memorial to the Civil War soldiers from this town. I noticed that it cast a long shadow.

For those who may be searching for family history, here are surnames from the plaque:
Banks, Berrey, Cole, Collins, Conway, Eddins, Estes, Goodall, Graves, Hawkins, Jasper, Jenkins, Kinsey, Kirtley, Kite, Lillard, May, Melton, Nicholson, Rose, Utz, and Wallace.
