No More Bird Seed this Season

Charlie Squirrel is looking for bird seed!

Black and White Weekend
As much as I like watching the birds come to my feeders, I have stopped putting food out for them. Bears have started wandering through Virginia neighborhoods including ours, and what they want is food. They will destroy bird feeders and break into garbage cans to get it! (Twice I've had a bird feeder destroyed by a hungry bear: once two years ago and once when we were living in Bryce Resort.)

Last year there were reports of bears damaging garages because they smelled trash or pet food inside! There was even a bear in Bentonville who learned how to open car doors and entered vehicles at night to find food!

I still have pictures of birds at our feeders so here are a few.

  1. Lovely photos again Linda. I will stop feeding the birds also. There will be more than enough for them to eat now. My problem are the raccoons. I have also read there have been sightings in a community in my son's neighborhood. Unheard of before. They are waking up :)

  2. What a wonderful squirrel photo! I should think he'll be able to find plenty of other food by now. I admit that I put feed out for our birds all year round, because they get used to the supply. But our garden is in town, with a lot of competition - and we don't have squirrels or raccoons!

  3. Dang, I'd put away the feeders too if it comes down to attracting bears!
But, you have some incredible photos of the birds today...and such a cute squirrel too.

Thanks for linking up this week at I'd Rather B Birdin'.

  4. Hello, Sorry that there is a problem with the bears in the neighborhood. I had to put my feeder away because of the raccoons and way too many squirrels. You have some cute birds and photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Sunday, enjoy your weekend!

  5. I guess I would stop feeding the birds, too...and get rid of anything tempting to the bears!

  6. It is best to do that when you're in bear country.

  7. Very pretty! We have had reports of black bears in our neighborhood, but I have never had any problems with them going after my feeders. Squirrels yes, but not bears!

  8. As can happen, it's not just the birds that come to the feeders.
You have to think safety first.

These are wonderful photographs you've shared here.

    All the best Jan

  11. Enjoy your birds photos immensely. Annoying isn't it when one has to stop feeding birds? We discontinued because the birds and rabbits were using our backyard as their private toilet, which I dogs loved to eat. Ugh!!

  12. I meant that the SQUIRRELS and rabbits were messing up the yard.

  14. I love my visitors to my feeders, it is hard to stop. I will when I run out, but will change to hummingbird feeders soon.

  15. Cute bird photos. The thought of having bears around would make me nervous.
