We took these pictures of each other during our afternoon on Assateague Island. I didn't walk around much because I had bruised a toe earlier that day at Ocean City.I like the beach on Assateague. It's clean and quiet, not cluttered with development.

Wild Horses on Assateague
The horses on Assateague Island are basically wild, but the ones on the Virginia part of the island are owned by the fire department of nearby Chincoteague, which sells a number of them every summer in order to keep the herd at a sustainable limit and earn some money at the same time. It's not all profit though. The fire company rounds up the the ponies and gets them vaccinated! Their hooves are trimmed and a general check up is conducted by a veterinarian.

Scenes Along the Wildlife Loop

 | The wildlife loop road is only open to cars after 3 P.M. We were glad we had the car to retreat to when the mosquitos started biting! Unfortunately they swarmed into the car and we were kept busy swatting them for a while. Frank was bitten many times; I was only bitten twice. He must smell good! |

Did you know that Assateague Island once ran continuously to the Delaware State Line and it included what is now Fenwick Island and Ocean City? It was cut apart by a hurricane in 1933.
I think I heard this as a child but had forgotten. It's probably the source for a recurring nightmare that I had of sea waters rising and stranding us on Fenwick Island, with a hurricane raging and no way to escape. Perhaps we saw pictures of this somewhere. My sister admits to having the same scary dream. Even as an adult, I felt uncomfortable at the beach for many years. I still prefer vacationing on higher ground!

 | At least five or six roses appeared to have washed ashore from the Atlantic Ocean. Some were on the sand, one was on a rock, and a gull was carrying petals of one. (Late that afternoon I saw another rose on the beach at Assateague.) |

 | We spent a few hours in Ocean City, Maryland — long enough to eat at Frank's traditional lunch spot and take a walk on the beach.

Garden Decor
Frank is on the lookout for garden statuary so when we passed this store in the Rehoboth area, he insisted we go back and take a closer look. We did not wind up buying any lawn decor but we did purchase a plant for the sun room.

We Interrupt this Travelogue...
Here is is the first of October and again I marvel at how fast time seems to pass.
For the past two weeks I've been posting photos of our trip to New Jersey and we were only there for a two days! Next I'll be posting some pictures of the beach part of the trip on the Delmarva Peninsula. But first I'll take a minute to update you on things in Virginia.
Some of the trees are changing color already. Any day between now and late October is a great time to visit the mountain-valley region of Virginia. Autumn is a wondrous season here.

Leaving Jersey on the Ferry
We enjoyed taking the Cape May - Lewes Ferry six years ago so we took it again on our recent trip. I like being able to travel from New Jersey to the Delmarva Peninsula without spending too much time driving in traffic.The waters of the Delaware Bay were calmer this time and the crossing was uneventful.
