I believe this modest-looking bird is a female house finch. She looks sweet but not at all showy, and thus we may overlook her. That is likely an advantage when it is time to look after her young, because she blends into the background and does not attract predators.
The male house finch is bright and hard to ignore. He has brilliant patches of red, although not as much as a purple finch.
...this is a rare sight at my feeders.

ReplyDeleteI've even seen displays of caged finches, of all colors...in a MacDonalds once! Many years ago. Behind glass except for the very top being mesh.
