The latest feature at the play space in Seven Bends State Park represents a talus formation. A talus slope or deposit is “formed by an accumulation of broken rock debris, as at the base of a cliff or other high place.” (Wikipedia) The State Park is at the foot of the Massanutten Mountains, known to hikers for jumbled rock slopes.
I took these photos just two days ago, but today the weather is miserable. We had rain, sleet, and a little snow. Sleet makes for a slippery surface. But weather in Virginia is changeable and we’ll have more nice days before long.
...we have rain now and sleet and snow is on the way.
ReplyDeleteThe stone formation looks rather peculiar!
ReplyDeleteI think it is designed so children can sit on the stones.
DeleteVisitors must like that tower, at least the young ones! Squirrel Ridge is a funny name!
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see.
ReplyDeleteIt is a nice park, great views!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you and your family!
Wishing you all the best in 2023!
Great views. We are waiting for a major storm to descend on us. I think we will be housebound today and perhaps tomorrow too. As long as we don't lose power we will be fine.
ReplyDeleteGreat stone formation (not natural looking at all) where I would have been hoping from rock to rock if I were a kid. Keep warm!
ReplyDeleteTalus is a term I'm quite familiar with.
ReplyDeleteWe're in the midst of a winter storm.
My husband was a geology major and he loved making puns with geology terms when he was in college. I'll have to show him this post. We had snow yesterday (New York State); most of it melted and it's raining now. Today is going to be an absolute mess with temperatures dropping from the 40's to single digits with high winds. ReplyDeleteThat is such an interesting feature to put in a playground. Frankly, I'm surprised it was allowed. Our playground is so regulated for safety that I fear this may not be allowed here.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool that there are features of the area that are presented in play areas for children. Great idea for an introduction.
ReplyDeleteOur weather here is also miserable but like your area it will get better soon. I'm happy anywhere north of 40 degrees.,
Me again, wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteTalus about it, that’s funny, Linda. Near us is the Pinnacles National Park where some of the caves were formed by talus rocks. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteHappy Holidays!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWorth a Thousand Words
Our high today is 81 (no, that's not a typo!). Back to more nomal weather as the week progresses. Merry Christmas!
