Backyard Birds and a Surprise

Yesterday was very windy but sunny. Since I try to get ten to 20 minutes of sun when possible, I found a spot on the deck that was not too windy in the afternoon. There I sat with my camera, catching sun rays and taking a few bird pictures.

A red-bellied woodpecker and a catbird posed for me in a tree.

I noticed movement to the left. It was a hummingbird but it flew off before I focused on it. For backyard birds, I use an old Nikon that has a nice zoom lens but it can be awkward to focus.

Fortunately the little hummer came back.

When it left, I was watching some geese when something came out of the woods on my right. It was a possum! It disappeared quickly and I'll spare you the blurred picture I got of its tail.

I was watching birds again when it reappeared on my right. It walked up within 20 feet of the deck!

It headed off to the left, keeping a wary eye on the geese. They hissed and flapped their wings! It ran off into an area along the property line that my neighbor calls the wetland because there are small shallow ponds among the trees.

The geese walked over and peered after it but did not pursue.

  1. I was thrilled to see that Possum Linda. We have nothing like that animal in the UK, in fact we have few mammals and those we have tend to be very nocturnal.

  3. Hello, Linda

I love all your post, the woodie, Catbird, the hummer and the geese. The possum is brave to be walking out in the yard in daylight. I have had them on the deck at night. Great shots! Thank you for linking up your post! Take care, happy Sunday! I wish you a great new week!

  8. What a hoot...those geese don't want to share their territory with Mr. Possum.

  9. You got a great shot of the possum! I think they are cute but they frighten me a bit with their sharp claws. I've come home to find them on the porch.

  13. We see quite a lot of possums here in Oregon, supposedly brought here by pioneers who wanted to start them breeding here. I’m fairly sure nobody hunts them now (I hope not). You have a great backyard!
