3. Today is Frank's birthday. We had dinner at Outback Steakhouse.
4. At a few grocery stores (like Whole Foods), I can get a salad to go in a cardboard carton. Unfortunately, most salad bars only offer plastic containers. I do wash them and recycle them, but not all recycling centers accept plastic that's not bottles. I hate to clog the landfill with unnecessary plastic. Plus we have to take recycling to the transfer station ourselves, so the more we have, the more times we have to drive there. Since I'm burning gas to recycle, I'm concerned about the carbon footprint of doing this. But what can you do?
Two words: boat people. A wall won't keep them out.
I'm not saying that we need to keep people out. We do need to continue vetting everyone who wants to come in. Security is important. But there are tunnels, planes, drones, boats, plus all sorts of inside threats that need attention, and that takes money.
And there's recent history. I'm old enough to remember the Mariel boatlift. In 1980, over 125,000 people came to our shores from Cuba in over 1,700 boats. The Coast Guard was overwhelmed.
I don't hear people talking about this.
Happy Birthday Frank. Love the B & W shot Linda. Thank you for all your comments over the year. I am just back from Cape Town with thousands of photographs which I now have to edit! I hope that 2019 will bee a a happy and healthy one for you and your family.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet black and white photo!
ReplyDeleteHello, I love the moon over the lake photo. Happy Birthday to Frank. I agree about the vetting, besides there is a wall in places already and it does not work.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day and weekend.
...I never hear of the Full Cold Moon.
ReplyDelete...I remember when black and white was all there was.
...Happy Birthday.
...I'm married to the recycling queen.
Thanks Linda for stopping by, Happy New Year.
...he will want to build a wall around the entire country to keep the rising ocean waters from flooding us out due to climate change.
I like the full cold moon shot, it's a beauty. Happy birthday to Frank. We just stopped buying food that comes in plastic. Plastic is everywhere. :(
ReplyDeleteI just took out the trash, which had several plastic boxes from take-outs, and I used to recycle everything but have gotten lazy. Thanks for reminding me of landfills...I'll put that on my 2019 list.
ReplyDeleteThat moon shot is incredible.
ReplyDeleteThe whole recycling thing is a dilemma. I think we need to hold our retailers more accountable for how they package their products. I like the moon photo and also the b&w shot. Have a Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteWow! The moon photo is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI do like the photo of the moon as well
ReplyDeleteGreat view of the full cold moon. I love full moons and the names that have been given to them.
ReplyDeleteI am not a historian but all the walls through history that I can think of, have not worked. Besides all the things you talked about, you have ladders.
Plus, from my reading, most people here illegally came in on a tourist visa and never left.
What a cool night reflection photo!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Frank.
ReplyDeleteI just love the moon photograph, it is fabulous.
All the best Jan
