The little Canada Geese are growing! When we first saw them two weeks ago, they were little fluff-balls huddling close to their mother. A week later they were marching around the yard with their parents and nannies.Do all geese have volunteer nannies? The geese on our lake had them last year too. Some of the nannies aren't even the same species! The graylag goose in the third photo hangs out with this Canada Goose family all day, helping to guard the little ones. Graylag geese are said to be domestic geese, although the ones on our lake don't belong to anyone. I assume they ran away from the farm years ago.
The last three pictures were taken yesterday, The goslings are several times their original size and appear more confident now, although their parents and helpers are still nearby.

ReplyDeleteIt's probably a good thing there are volunteer nannies with this many little ones. It won't be long before they'll be hard to corral.
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor's goose would come to the pond and spend time with the mallard ducklings as the geese would not let him. Spring brings out the parenting hormones. Very sweet.... Michelle
