House where Col. Gilmor was Captured

Professor Poland had arranged a tour of a marvelous historic house in Moorefield and the owner very generously shared the history of the home. His cat Lucky very nearly stole the show, though, greeting every cat-lover in the group.

The house is the place where Colonel Gilmor, CSA, was surprised and captured in February 1865. Gilmor had been sent to Hardy County to consolidate two partisan units and coordinate an attack on the B&O Railroad, but wound up in a Yankee prison.

Below we see an older portion of the house, originally built of logs and later covered with board siding. Like many historic houses, sections were added over the years.
