Lee and Grant Met Here

Appomattox, VA

"On the knoll before you, Lee and Grant held the second of their two meetings at Appomattox Court House. They met here on the morning of April 10. Grant hoped to enlist Lee’s support in urging the surrender of other Confederate armies, and Lee was intent on working out the final details of surrender."

Before our group left Appomattox Court House, we visited the spot where Lee and Grant met. Then we drove to our final stop, the location of Lee's headquarters. There we walked into the woods to see the actual spot. It was the end of our trip, and the end of a series of field trips that covered the Civil War in Virginia. I completed the series twice, having started it in 1989.
