The 2008 "pony swim" will be July 30. I've never seen it but many people love it and come year after year.
It is illegal to pet or feed the wild horses. Click for an interesting page about the horses and how they sometimes harass campers.

It is undergoing some revision at the moment.
Also, do not confuse the wild ponies of Chincoteague, Virginia with the Maryland ponies. Assateague Island stretches over both states. The Virginia herds, southern and northern, are controlled not by birth control, but by selling off the foals. The ponies are owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Dept.
