Camp Garnett is in West Virginia's beautiful mountains near the town of Beverly. In July 1861, Union troops under General McClellan routed Confederates who had made this their fort on Rich Mountain.
From the sign: "Confederates built Camp Garnett to block the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike. Soldiers here felled trees, dug trenches and stacked rocks for protection. Fortifications covered the hills overlooking the road, forming a fearsome obstacle for General McClellan's army."
