Their fancy name is Cypripedium and they belong to the orchid family.
When the lot behind ours was cleared for a homesite, I built a small wall around the lady's slippers that were close to the property line. It turned out to be a good thing, because the builder dumped huge piles of dirt next to them, but managed to avoid the little walled area. (It probably helped that I explained to him what was there. They were not blooming by the time he excavated the site.)
