The Geese Have Finished Kindergarten

The goslings are growing. Even though their parents and aunties stay near by, the young geese move about a little more freely, no longer looking at the adults every few seconds.

They are looking a bit gangly when out of the water but they are still adorable.

Landscapes Near Warrenton

Flowers for Sale

While waiting for my spouse to reappear in a big box store, I got bored and took this picture with my cell phone. I figured it qualifies for Orange You Glad It's Friday, but unfortunately the linky isn't coming up for me right now so I'll have to wait to share it there.

Oh, I can share it with Photo Friday. Their challenge this week is Flowers!

Fences and Signs at Riverton Park

Front Royal, Virginia

public park

Riverton Park was once just a fishing spot and boat launch on the North Fork of the Shenandoah. The boat ramp is still there but picnic tables and a Civil War Trails marker make the site useful to more people.

I'm sharing this post with Good Fences and Signs, Signs.  Read on for more pictures and some Civil War history.

The Civil War interpretive marker tells of the struggle by Federal troops to keep Confederate soldiers from crossing the river here during the Battle of Front Royal in 1862.  You can read the text of the marker on HMDB.org.

A Couple of Odd Shots and Some Old Folk Fun

truck made of pipes and wood

I'm counting this truck sculpture/ play equipment as "Good" for the Good, Random and Fun blog hop. I think it's very clever; I've never seen anything like it!

The next photo is pretty "Random." What we're looking at is maple seedlings growing on our swimming pool cover.

Maples sow a lot of seeds, and this year must have been ideal for those tiny trees to grow.  They came off with the mesh cover, as did a bunch of leaves. After we removed the second cover (which is pretty much a big tarpaulin), I noticed tadpoles swimming in the pool. I netted out about 50 of them and relocated them to a pond before my husband started adding "shock" to the water.

Next up is the Fun category. Our fun is pretty sedate since we are "old" folks. But I've always felt a picnic in Shenandoah National Park is fun, even if it just consists of burgers and fries.

Stopping at the overlooks can be fun too!

Rural Page County

Along Route 340, you can view some lovely scenery! With the Blue Ridge Mountains on one side and the Massanutten Range on the other, you drive through a verdant valley with plenty of charming farms.

The View from Big Spring Church

Field with bales of hay

This is north of Luray, Virginia. The church was built in 1890 as a Baptist Church but fell into disuse and was eventually fixed up and became the Big Spring Mennonite Church

Ten Years of Blogging

heron in creek
I first posted on this blog on June 13, 2005. That was over five thousand posts ago!

At that time we were living in Virginia's "Northern Neck" in a community called Glebe Harbor. We had moved there with the intention of staying permanently. The house was a modest rambler situated on a cove not far from the lower Potomac River. We enjoyed a water view from the back deck, where we could watch birds like this great blue heron.

That wasn't enough to keep us there, though. The community felt isolated, too far from a large town. And in those days, it did not have high-speed internet. We only had dial-up access over aging phone lines. Even with images turned off, it took several minutes for a page to load. I could literally click on a link, go to the kitchen and get a cup of coffee, and return before the page finished loading! For someone who had worked as an internet professional, it was very irritating!

For blogging, I often prepared my photos beforehand, drove 20 minutes to a library that had high-speed access, and did the post from my laptop there. Needless to say I did not post very frequently.

About that same distance from the house was the Westmoreland County seat of Montross, a charming town which had a basic supermarket and some small stores. But the supermarket was second-rate with a sad selection of produce so I was unhappy with that, although in late summer I could buy vegetables at farm stands. If I needed specialty items for my wheat-free milk-free diet, I had to drive 90 minutes to Fredericksburg. I could also find high quality dog food there. But that meant 3 hours of driving round-trip, and it was tiring.

After spending summer in that home, we decided to move to our vacation home in Bryce Resort. It was smaller and still in a rural area, but local shopping was better, internet was fast, and a decent-sized city was only an hour away.  We made that move in September 2005.

By December I was posting almost daily. During the following year, I wrote 410 posts. Since then I have averaged over a post a day. It's a good hobby for a photographer who loves the internet.

A Cat in Riverton

This is a feral cat. He looks sad but don't worry, I saw that some people have set up feeding stations. Also, he had friends and relatives hanging around

Random Shots, Early Summer

people tubing

It's summer already and the world looks green here! I've got five random topics here for Willy Nilly Friday but they relate to summer, which happens to be the theme of My Town Shoot Out this week.

1. Outdoor fun! The first picture shows some folks reading to go tubing at a boat landing in Front Royal. The South Fork of the Shenandoah is shallow there as long as it's not flooded by recent storms.

2. Outdoor eating! Frank loves ice cream and frozen custard, and hot weather means more little shops are selling it.

3. Sudden storms! Summer storms sometimes start suddenly and pass quickly. This one kept me in Walmart for an extra 15 minutes because I had not carried my umbrella with me. It was a dramatic thunderstorm and left dramatic clouds and wet pavement. I'm sharing this shot with Skywatch Friday.

4. Festivals and Fairs! Last weekend we went to a garden festival at Belle Grove. We bought iris plants and day lilies and a few other things. I photographed the 4-H booth because it hold sentimental value for me. My first job was working to start a 4-H program in Alexandria, Virginia.

geese5. Birds are raising their babies! Goslings and ducklings are being watched over by their parents at the lake. These babies are well-behaved and their parents keep a close eye on them.

These geese have orange beaks so I'm sharing their picture with Orange You Glad It's Friday.
Have a great summer, if that's what it is in your part of the world!

Scenes Along Back Road

school bus

Back Road is the actual name of a road in Shenandoah County. There's also a Middle Road. Both go back over 150 years.
