1. This photo I made many years back when I was taking a Black and White Photography course at NVCC. I'm not sure which course, maybe 103. I did a portfolio of self-portraits, none of them traditional-looking. This was long before "selfies," of course, and lenses were different then. To do a self-portrait I would use an accessory timer or a bulb-style shutter release, which was a remote control that used an air tube.
The college had a great photography program, even then in the pre-digital era. (Wow, I see Sarah Raymond is still teaching there! I so enjoyed her classes!)

2. Speaking of old photos, this one goes back a ways. Obviously it was before 2001 because the World Trade Center can be seen on the left. Marie was living in Jersey City before she moved across the river (and later moved back), so I think this was in the late 80's.

3. Moving on to the present, Front Royal is getting a new store in the old Kmart space. As far as I can tell, it will be like Tractor Supply plus sporting goods. The kayaks should be popular because the town is on the Shenandoah River, a fun place for shallow-water boating.

4. Swimming pool season is almost over and leaves are starting to clutter our above-ground pool. We considered selling it because it's expensive to start up in the spring, but after I injured my foot I was grateful to have it. I can exercise in the water without putting too much weight on my feet, thus avoiding the pain that I get when walking.
I have a bone spur on top of one foot. Surgical removal is scheduled for the 19th. Today I saw a physician and had an EKG to make sure I'm healthy enough. I'll be glad to get it over with so I can wear regular shoes when winter comes. For now, I'm wearing Birkenstock sandals every day.
5. We had our vacant lots perc-tested. Perc in this case means percolation and refers to suitability for a septic field. City sewer pipes do not come out this far. Two sites that are suitable for septic fields were mapped out. We hope to sell one of the lots, keeping the other one, which is adjacent to our home, as a buffer and natural area.

Your black and white photo is lovely Linda, very film noir. Poignant to see the Twin Towers especially with another anniversary in a couple of days. There was a KMart a few miles away that stayed empty for a long time but now it is a hardware store. Sorry to hear about your foot, I expect you can't wait to get it taken care of. The local pool helped me a lot when I badly sprained my ankle a while back. I learned something new about perc-testing today. Have a great weekend :)
ReplyDeleteAn interesting series of images. Love the sense of wildnesss suggested by the scattered hair in the first photo.
ReplyDeleteHope good come from the surgery. I still have a remote for my DSLR
ReplyDeleteI like your self portrait - unusual, particularly for the time. Things were more difficult in those days, but a great deal of fun.
ReplyDeleteI hope the foot surgery issues go smoothly. We used to have K-Marts up here, but the chain went out of business years ago.
ReplyDeleteYour self-portrait is dramatic. I like it. It's sad to see the twin towers standing there in that photo. We're still enjoying our pool too. The warm weather has been good for swimming this year.
ReplyDeleteamazing one.
ReplyDeleteI like your pre-digital selfie! So much more difficult to do back in the day. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful B&W "selfie" from those days before digital! I loved seeing the picture of your (friends?) taken with the Twin Towers in the background. Such a sad anniversary coming up. Loved the pool shot with the leaves...yes, they can be annoying to clean and start up but I hope you continue to enjoy it. Best wishes for a successful surgery on that foot!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Those are my daughters in the NYC shot.
