Blog Post #5800

On blog anniversaries I try to break my usual pattern of photoblogging. Instead I write a bit more, perhaps about myself or about blogging. I am privileged to feel part of a lively blogging community, sharing with other bloggers through linkups and commenting.

Lately many of us have gone through stress and dismay, especially here in the USA as we struggled through a contentious election and it's aftermath. More than a few of us dealt with a sense of helplessness. Personally my concern about the environment reached a level of near-panic. We are already dealing with disasters in water pollution and air that's not fit to breathe, and there is evidence that the world's climate is changing in dangerous ways. Other issues are also extremely worrisome. So I am addressing other bloggers today.

You can play a part in making things better!  Many of the blogs I visit demonstrate great talent in communicating, both in words and through the power of photography. Use that talent to share your passions and concerns. You are part of the solution!

Sharing the magic of the natural world will help others to appreciate it. People will try to protect what they love when they realize it is threatened. We may be a small part of this movement, but we can start there and go on to doing more. For instance, you can write your congressman and enclose a picture so that your letter stands out.

If your concern is human rights, blog about that. Show photos of people; we are instinctively drawn to faces!  If your concern is health or economic issues, use your talent there. And again, write your congressman, or look for an opportunity to share your views in person. Calling is effective too, although sometimes uncomfortable for us introverts.

If you are not already a member of an organization supporting your issue, join one or sign up online for their updates.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
