After January's big snow storm, there was two much snow to walk around outdoors so I spent some time taking pictures through a window. When I saw a shape across the lake that appeared to be a heron, I zoomed in so I could see it better. Yes, there he was!
I busied myself with trying to get a clear picture of him, leaning on the window frame and keeping the camera steady. (The zoom can make the camera shake enough to blur the image.) At first the geese seemed to ignore him, marching past him on the ice.
After a while, the geese turned and approached the heron. They spent some time looking a him. What were they thinking? Were they asking his advice?
After they walked away, some Canada Geese approached him. I wish I knew what was being communicated.

All that snow makes me feel cold.
ReplyDeleteThats a nice set of garden visitors - although when the ice thaws I'm sure the fish will not agree.

You do wonder what the interaction's like. Herons seem more solitary than geese and ducks, who naturally gravitate towards groups.
ReplyDeleteThe geese were saying, "We were here first. And even if we weren't there are more of us."
ReplyDeleteI learned of your blog at The Bee Writes.
What a great capture.
ReplyDeleteI do like all of these images. Wonderful that you were there to get them.
ReplyDeleteI love these pictures and the little story to go along with it. It does look like he is the wise old man of the bunch ready to offer advice. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great series!
ReplyDeleteI am so so sorry for the delay getting here to visit with you this week...a birthday celebration and warm weather keeping us busy outdoors doing some much needed yard clean up....
ReplyDeleteWow...now you have ME wondering just what the 'conversations' were between them all.
Fantastic spotting...it looks odd to see a heron in the snow!!! Again, wow.
Thanks for sharing the link this week at I'd Rather B Birdin'. Much appreciated.
The heron looks miserable! The geese on the other hand look fat & sassy and out for a stroll! :-)
ReplyDeleteWe have a heron that I see during the summer but never in the winter.
