Perhaps you've heard of Chincoteague through the story "Misty of Chincoteague," which was a popular children's book that was made into a movie in 1961. Or perhaps you've been there to visit the wildlife refuge or the beautiful beach on nearby Assateague Island. (If you haven't, I recommend that you do.)
The Good: The annual pony sale made popular by the book and movie has raised ample money for the Chincoteague Fire Department. It has also drawn large numbers of tourists to the island, bolstering the local economy which had previously been dependent upon fishing.
The mural of a pony relaxing in a hammock is on the carnival grounds.
The Random: Chincoteague celebrates it's famous ponies! You see ponies on local ranches and on neighboring Assateague Island, which has Misty herself, taxidermically preserved.

ReplyDeleteI like the cute mural of the horse. Chincoteague is one of my favorite places to visit. I love the ponies and all the birds on the refuge. Great post, enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteMurals looks beautiful to see...
ReplyDeleteI love that mural!! A horse in a hammock... oh my.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the location, but not a movie or book. The horse looks quite tranquil.
ReplyDeleteIt's gratifying to know that wild ponies are allowed to live freely still and it would be nice to visit this reserve.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to Mosaic Monday.

ReplyDeleteI still have that book! It was by one of my favorite authors as a child. I can't believe we live in Virginia and have never gone there. I'll have to put it on my list and make a point of it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great place to visit. I'd love to see the wild horses.
ReplyDeleteI guess the mural is telling us that ponies have a pretty leisurely existence on the island. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
