We passed this sign near Sperryille. It's not far from Shenandoah National Park where we did see a bear just a few months ago. Bear attacks are extremely rare in the Eastern US, and the black bears that live here are usually shy toward humans. However, a hiker in New Jersey was killed by one in September. So it's not surprising that campers and hikers are starting to carry bear spray
.A study showed that the spray (a strong pepper spray) is more effective than a gun in stopping a charging bear! Who knew?

ReplyDeleteMy odd encounters with black bears has always had the bear running off. If you make enough noise, they know you're there and will want to get away from you. It's about understanding how to behave in bear country and what not to do.
ReplyDeleteBear spray? Is that anything like that smelly axe spray that teenage boys cover themselves with?
ReplyDeleteI live in the foothills of Colorado and we see black bears from time to time. I try to make a lot of noise when walking on a trail as they will run away if they hear people. It is not good to surprise them. Bear stray is also a good thing to carry.

ReplyDeletewe came across 3 cubs a few years back on a hike...didn't see mama but heard her...we made lots of noise and have learned to be noisy hikers now but i'd love to have some of that bear spray just in case...that's a sad story about the hiker but i'm also sad that they killed the bear...they were in the bear's home.

ReplyDeleteTex expressed my thoughts exactly. My son volunteered (voluntold) to be pepper sprayed as part of his training. He said it was the worst pain ever. But it's something they needed to do so that they know how to react if they ever use it on someone.. it's bound to spray back at them somewhat. Still.. it's better than being eaten by a bear. ;)
