I have a photo album from the early years of my parents' marriage. There are three pages of snapshots from a Florida vacation in December 1941.
Mother told me about it. They were visiting her father who was stationed there with the Navy. One day while they were there they heard a paper boy call out the headline "Pearl Harbor Attacked."
"Oh my God!" said her father. "I've got to get back to the base!"
The photographic part of this story ends abruptly. After three pages of carefree photos, there's a blank page. Then there are no more pictures until spring of 1942! Eventually there are pictures of my dad in his Navy uniform.
Today is December 7: Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

That's certainly a date to remember. Important for Britain and the rest of the world too. What a fabulous treasure that album must be. I actually have my parents' correspondence from the war years; they were married in 1940, just as the Battle of Britain was starting. The church was destroyed during the Blitz.
ReplyDeletewhat a sad time...

It is sad how many men gave there like that day to save the U.S.
ReplyDeleteInteresting bit of history you have, or don't have, tells its own story. How blessed to have photos of your parents from that time.
ReplyDeleteOld photos tell us a lot about the past. The story to go with these is very interesting.
