It looks like the tower has been painted since we were here in 2011. See our pictures on climbing the lighthouse.
This lighthouse was completed in 1867 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's purpose was to shine a bright light that sailors could see, so that they would know they where they were and be able to avoid running aground. Lighthouses are often admired as symbols of guidance and hope.
