Smokey Bear became the fire prevention symbol of the U.S. Forest Service 70 years ago. On August 9, 1944, the "standards" for the new icon were established, including his stiff-brimmed hat.
A few years later a bear cub who survived a wildfire was given a home in the National Zoo and named Smokey. I saw him when I was a child, so I feel a fondness for this guy. This sign stands along Route 340 not far from the north entrance to Skyline Drive.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad Smokey has been around these 70 years to help us remember to do our part to protect the forests.
