Peggy and Curt

It's my sister's birthday so I found and scanned a really old picture of her. She and our cousin were dressed in improvised costumes, looking something like Roman centurions. I was older than them and I had a Kodak camera in search of interesting subjects.

Here's a more recent picture of them that I took in 2006. By this time my cousin had changed the spelling of his name from Curt to Kurt in remembrance of his great-uncle Kurt Freschl, who had anglicized his name to Curt Freshel during the first World War so that it would not appear to be German.

  5. Love that old black and white - I am the "keeper" of the family history, so to speak...so I have all the old photos - some from as far back as my great grandparents! My maiden name was Messersmith...anglicized for the same reason. No one ever changed it back, though!

  10. I love that you could include both photos - past and present.

Our family also changed names during WWI, so our German heritage was Americanized (is that a word?). We went from Schmidt to Smith.

Our family also had a name change due to our German heritage. During WWI, my great-grandfather joined the U.S. Army and changed our name from Schmidt to Smith.
