John McNeill was originally from Moorefield and returned there during the Civil War and organized a Confederate unit of partisan rangers. After he was killed near Mount Jackson, his son Jesse became leader of the unit, which was by that time called McNeill's Rangers.
McNeill's Raid
Here, 1865, McNeill's Rangers under Lieut. Jesse C. McNeill started raid on Cumberland where they captured Generals Kelley and Crook of the Union Army. The Rangers, organized by Capt. John Hanson McNeill performed many daring deeds.
